Martha Stewart

Martha Stewart a known celebrity and founder of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia (a business which is built on showing others how to cost effectively manage and decorate the home), who was given a tip by Douglas Fanueil and Mr. Bacanovic, employees of the Merrill Lynch brokerage company. This tip which broke the confidentiality policy of the brokerage company led to the subsequent sale of Martha’s shares in the ImClone company during the latter company’s blackout period with the effects of causing the share price of ImClone’s share to drop and the share price of shares of the Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia to drop after the scandal broke that Martha had engaged in insider trading. Through a series of events, she, her broker and his assistant were subsequently prosecuted and sentenced. In this case study, we will be examining how the public perceived Martha Stewart’s actions and also the penalties that were imposed. We will also look at how her decisions impacted and also provided major setbacks to her business because of her insider trading scandal on the Imclone Systems Incorporated. By carrying out this research, we as a group would determine if the blame should be placed on her or not and also determine if the fines were adequate for the crime committed. 1.Did Martha Stewart commit the crime of insider trading when she sold her ImClone shares on December 27, 2001? We believe that Martha Stewart was guilty of insider trading. The justifications for our point are as follows: a) Martha Stewart was told by Mr. Faneuil (under direction from his boss who was also Ms. Stewart’s stockbroker) that the largest stockholders of ImClone (Sam Waksal and his daughter Aliza) had sold all their shares in the company on that same day, December 27th, and she immediately sold hers as well. This in itself was a breach of client confidentiality and insider information because no one knew about it but their stockbrokers. By virtue of the position Mr. Bacanovic (Mr. Faneuil’s boss) at the brokerage company of Merril Lynch he was not to mention or discuss the actions of any of his other clients. b) Even though Martha Stewart did not know about the FDA’s unfavourable report about ImClone, the sudden ‘dumping’ of the shares on the market was enough for her to speculate that there must be something wrong and that she should get her shares sold as quickly as possible in order to obtain the best possible share price or avoid a loss. Tipped with the knowledge of the Waksals actions and her intuition of imminent disaster she ordered that her shares in that company be sold as quickly as possible. c) She called Sam Waksal as soon as she received the tip-off in the hopes of obtaining the reason behind their actions. d) When investigated by criminal authorities she instructed her secretary to change the original message the secretary wrote from Mr. Bacanovic and then thought better of it and advised the secretary to revise the changes and restore the original message. She also lied repeatedly to criminal authorities on the real reason behind the sudden sale of her shares. 2.Did the U.S. Attorneys and the Securities and Exchange Commission use good judgment in the indictment of Martha Stewart? Do you believe that her indictment was based on evidence of a serious crime, or do you believe that prosecutors consciously or unconsciously had additional motives for pursuing the case? It is our belief that good judgment was exercised in indicting Martha Stewart. The indictment was based on the evidence of reasonable intent. Martha Stewart on hearing of the actions of the Waksals, and making reasonable judgments that the company was in trouble, intended that she should not make a loss on her investment in ImClone and made immediate moves and succeeded in selling her shares in the company for a profit of $228,000. If she had waited until December 28th when the share price fell to $45.39 per share she would have made only $178, 292, a loss of $49,708. Also the trading of Martha Stewart’s shares occurred during the company’s blackout period which commenced on December 21st. At this time no shares from the company were permitted to occur and the stockbrokers at Merrill Lynch would have known that and should have advised their clients accordingly. It is our belief that prosecutors might consciously have had additional motives for pursuing the case. Martha Stewart a celebrity of high profile would sell newspapers if investigated and later indicted. A prosecutor who was able to make a strong, believable case would bring fame to himself/herself and possibly new job opportunities. 3. Do you agree with the jury that she was guilty beyond a reasonable doubt of the conspiracy and obstruction of justice charges? We agree with the jury that Martha Stewart was guilty beyond a reasonable doubt of the conspiracy and obstruction of justice charges. To establish a reasonable doubt of conspiracy, four main things must occur: a) Two or more persons in some way or manner, coming to a mutual understanding, in trying to accomplish a common and unlawful plan as charged in the indictment. An example of this includes the breakfast meeting between Martha Stewart and Peter Bacanovic on January 16th – after the sale of the shares – to construct a statement that they reproduced to the criminal authorities – that is, that Martha had agreed to sell her shares if the share price fell below $60.00 per share. Another example was illustrated when Douglas Faneuil was persuaded by his boss (Peter Bacanovic) to agree to the conspiracy constructed by his boss that there was a $60 stop-loss order on Martha Stewart’s ImClone shares. b) The person willfully became a member of such a conspiracy. Mr. Fanueil accepted a bribe from his boss (Peter Bacanovic) in the form of an extra week of vacation and a paid trip, so that he would not reveal the fact that Martha Stewart had been tipped off. Fanueil’s actions were acts of choice. c) That one of the conspirators during the existence of the conspiracy knowingly committed at least one of the methods (or overt act) described in the indictment. Bacanovic and Stewart repeatedly lied to the government agencies and attorneys in order to try to hamper the investigations. Bacanovic tampered the worksheet by adding â€Å"@60† near the entry for Stewart’s shares of Imclone. d) That such ‘overt act’ was a knowingly committed act done in order to carry out or accomplish some object of the conspiracy. Justification of this was seen when Bacanovic informed Faneuil that he must call Stewart to inform her of the Waksal’s actions. He decided to leave the message with Stewart’s administrative assistant in order for her to receive the message to allow her to carry out or give instructions on what actions to take. Faneuil had asked Bacanovic if he was allowed to tell Stewart and he stated â€Å"Of course that’s the whole point† On realizing what the written policy inside of the office stated he was very worried. Obstruction of justice is a crime. It is an offense that arises when someone tries to prevent, impede or influence the administration of justice, for example, bribing a juror, threatening a judge or encouraging false testimony. Obstruction of justice occurred when Stewart and Mr. Bacanovic conspired and continuously lied about the reason why Stewart sold her shares in an effort to hamper investigations. One such lie was the prearranged plan to sell Stewart’s shares if the price fell below $60 per share. 4. Was her punishment, including both imprisonment and fines appropriate? Were the punishment of Peter Bacanovic and Douglas Faneuil appropriate? We agree that the punishment imposed on Martha Stewart was a little too lenient. Due to her actions after being tipped off, she was able to make a profit of approximately $50,000, thus a fine of $30,000 still meant that she was gaining approximately $20,000. We believe that all of her profits should have been disgorged as compared to her wealth the amount is relatively small anyway. The imprisonment of five months imprisonment and then five months of home confinement, we believe was a suitable length of time. The relinquishing of her duties to act as an officer of a public company did not do her any damage as she still drew the same salary as she was accustomed to and even had a bonus. In her after-sentencing statement, she said that this had been no more than a personal matter that had been blown out of proportion; this in itself indicates that she was not remorseful about her actions. Whether these punishments were a deterrent for future action is questionable as Martha Stewart still violated the terms of her house arrest and this had to be subsequently extended for three weeks. We think that the punishments imposed on both Peter Bacanovic and Douglas Faneuil were inappropriate. First we look at Douglas Faneuil. Although he was following the instructions of his boss, he knew what he was told to do was wrong. He knew there was a displayed, written office policy with respect to client information privacy. He accepted a bribe from Mr. Bacanovic and waited approximately seven months after the incident before coming forward with the truth. A short term of imprisonment at a minimum security facility might have been added. With respect to Mr. Bacanovic, his penalties should have been harsher. His position at Merrill Lynch afforded him access to certain non-public information and as such his actions should have been within the law. He disregarded the policies of the company with respect to confidentiality, he also used his position to influence and bribe another employee of the company to comply with a conspiracy in the commitment of insider trading and he also conspired with his client Martha, to concoct an alibi to avoid prosecution by the government. He should have been given a heavier fine since he was the main person behind the scandal and had gained commission on the sale of both the Waksal and the Stewart shares. Also a longer term of imprisonment would have been fitting, maybe a term of two years.

Geochemical archives in lake sediments provide information that aligns with the geological features of Mars. Various acidic saline lakes in Australia, the United States and other countries are analogous with the rocks and soil qualities of planet Mars. The conditions of regional acid saline lakes will be discussed, and terrestrial hematite concretions will be compared with those found on earth. Amino acids are the key to terrestrial biochemistry, widely prevalent in terrestrial life, and easlily identified by means of advanced instruments and technology. For this reason, amino acids are ideal as a biomolecular class, to use for planetary exploration. How chemical biosignatures in amino acids can help to indicate life in Mars will be examined. Introduction â€Å"Un derstanding lake chemistry is critical for correctly interpreting the geochemical archives of lake deposits† (Cohen 69). The presence of elements and isotopes in lakes are closely associated with external climatic and watershed processes. The concentrations of solutes determine the distribution of organisms, and the precipitation or dissolution of mineral phases. Sedimentary archives develop from both fossils and minerals, and interpreting aspects of ancient water chemistry from these records may enable the reconstruction of paleoclimate or activity prior to the presence of human life around the lake. Similarly, the interpretation of isotopic records require a preliminary understanding of their behavior in lakes, and its relationship with external factors such as rainfall or nutrient discharge. Paleolimnology is the study of past conditions or processes of ancient lakes, and of the sediments and history of existing lakes It is recognized that lakes probably existed on Mars and on other planets of the solar system. This invites the next generation of paleolimnologists with tremendous opportunities â€Å"to apply terrestrially gained knowledge of how ‘small’ water bodies record their histories through their sedimentary records† (Cohen 398). Planetary geologists would require the paleolimnological literature to help them interpret these records. However, geologists should be proactive in suggesting the ways in which such deposits should be explored. They are also required to devise analog studies of lake histories from extreme terrestrial environments that replicate those of other planets like Mars. Research that specifically target lakes increase the signals of interest, providing the most highly resolved temporal records possible. Rapid advances in the accuracy of dating lake sediments is expected to play a critical role in advancing paleolimnology, permitting an increasing refinement in the interpretation of time series data and to us e those data to test quantitative model predictions. Of Mice and Men Essay John Steinbeck, the American author of this emotional novel, was bought up in Salinas. His family owned a lot of land, therefore meaning he was quite rich. He went to university to study writing and left without a degree as he dropped out half way through the course. However he took up work as a labourer and a journalist. I noticed how Steinbecks background really inspired him to write a book like Of Mice and Men. It shows how he wants to let out all his emotions as a child into this book. He, George and Lennie have a lot in common. The American Dream is belief in the freedom that allows all citizens and residents of the United States to achieve their goals in life through hard work. Everyone has a dream that they want to achieve somewhere in their lifetime. There are two different types of The American Dream. The first is the entitlement of land- freedom, just like George and Lennies dream. The other is luck, fame and money just like Curleys wifes dream in the book. In 1929 the Wall Street Crash was introduced which led to on going recession. This also led to failed businesses, harsh poverty and long term unemployment. At this point men couldnt afford to have families so therefore men travelled alone just like George and Lennie. There was no heath care so the only hope left was dreams. The book is called Of Mice and Men but is that what it has always been called? The actual title was Something that happened. This suggests something that you as the reader were not involved in. Steinbeck also wrote this book as a detached narrator, so he as well was not involved in the action. He began writing it in early 1936 and it was published in 1937. The book was immediately successful. Even now this book shows so much meaning of how The American Dream was so important to the people in the 1930s. This was because dreams were the only thing American people had to depend on. Dreams can take you away from the real world. A dream can sometimes make a person be very selfish. Sometimes you need to come away from your dream and think about others. Throughout the first chapter of Of Mice and Men is just setting the scene. The first time we saw George and Lennie was in an open pool. They soon find a bunk house with lots of other men to share with. The ranch where both men worked was in Salinas, where Steinbeck himself was brought up. Steinbeck was showing that the settings were slowly closing in so you feel more isolated. Steinbeck produces two very different characters which are most like him. That is the reason why both characters have such a major roll to play. George and Lennie have the most unique bond throughout Of Mice and Men. Both have gone though very hard times with Lennie being retarded and George having to keep a constant eye on him and not being able to pursue his dream alone. We start to get an image that Lennie has a disability in the early stages of the book, just the way he behaves. Lennie dipped his whole head under, hat and all. Look George. Look what I done. This shows us that Lennie has a child-like mind and wants to impress and please George. It is very enigmatic that two men are travelling together, alone. However this was very typical to do this at the time because of societys pressure. What is very astonishing about Lennie and George is that they are both very different from each other. Lennie is a big man who has a disability because he got hit by a horse when he was younger. George is a complete contrast to Lennie as he is a small man always aware of what is going on around him and conscious of what is happening. George and Lennie both have a dream but are not necessarily the same. Steinbeck represents this by describing in such detail what they want together. We could live offa the fatta the lan. The irony is about the countryside they are in, it is rich. They are living of the bounty of nature. Money and family are not mentioned in the dream. It provides them with everything they need. We could have a few pigs. When the fruit come in we could can it. Every Sunday wed kill a chicken or a rabbit. Steinbeck uses we a lot in the dream. It shows that the dreamed is shared between Lennie and George. The repetition emphasises this. Steinbeck creates the dream mainly by using dialogue. By having George and Lennie discuss their dream together allows the reader to have a sense that they have been planning this dream together and not alone. George and Lennies interpretation of the dream is slightly different. Lennie wants to tend the rabbits as he likes feeling soft things. George also has a dream of his own. He could get a job, eat at any place he likes, stay in a hotel, and get a gallon of whisky. However Lennie is stopping him from doing all of this. George needs Lennie and Lennie needs George. All George wants is love and affection and he knows he cant get that, because after everything that has gone on, it is hard. George is still with Lennie because Lennie himself is a big man so he can protect George from other people. Lennie is stopping George from achieving many dreams, but the reason why George is still with him is because Lennie is the only person George has got. George has no family nor does he have friends. He only has Lennie. George has a short temper and lashes out at Lennie very often verbally. Lennie is a fragile man who doesnt like seeing his comrade like this. You can tell that they both care about each other an awful lot. Another way that Steinbeck represents the American Dream is how Candy lost his companion. Candy had a lot of dreams when his dog was alive. This is because the dog had been through everything with him, but now that he and his dog was getting old there was only one thing left for Carlson to do. A shot sounded. Candys dream had just been killed. The second that bullet hit that dog, Candys dreams were shattered. His dog was a part of Candys dreams A dream could be in the in the past or the future. In Candys case it was all in the past. His dog had been through everything with him. This is a similarity between George and Lennie who have also been through everything with each other. Candy knows that nobody could ever replace his dog. Slim offers him any of the pups but Candy just remained silent. Candy feels that he cant achieve anything without his dog anymore. That is why he he lays in his bed silent for a long time. He treats the dog like a human, as part of his family, someone really close. That is what makes Candy be so silent for a long period of time. As Candy lays there silent on his bed he overhears George and Lennie talking about their dream. Again Steinbeck reveals the dream by dialogue. They talk about how one day they are going to get out of the ranch and live offa the fatta the lan. As Candy listens to their dream in such detail he asks if he can be a part of it. An old dream has ended but a new one is just beginning. Dreams are pacific to an individual however sometimes a dream could be a part of a team. This is exactly what Candy wants to do with George and Lennie. He wants to share their dream and be a part of it. After all shared dreams are much stronger than individual ones. Steinbeck now introduces and individual character that defines him from the rest of the ranchers. Crooks is the only black man on the ranch therefore he is excluded from society. He is separated by being pushed into a disassociated room. He is not allowed to socialise with the other ranchers because of his race. In the 1930s Americans were against anyone who were coloured. These people would not get treated fairly and would usually get beaten up just for the colour of their skin. Crooks father did not want him socialising with white people because he knew that they will abuse him. The American Dream is about equality of all men. This is where Crooks rights come in. The irony here is that segregation leads to a better life. A very unusual thing about Crooks is that he is the only one who can read; hence conveying that he is very well educated. We know that Crooks has already had his dream just by the way in which he speaks to Lennie. Crooks and Lennie both have a disability. Although he feels appreciated that Lennie is around him, Crooks speaks in a very negative manner about Lennies dream. An never a God damn one of em ever gets it. Crooks is contradicting to Lennie that dreams can never be achieved. However if you dont try to achieve your dream, it will never come true. Crooks suddenly changes his mind about the dream and hesitates as he asks Lennie if he could be a part of the dream too. Crooks dream is about having those long dark nights alone change by having people talk to him and communicate with him. His dream is all about regaining sense of belonging with others. Crooks heart wants the dream but his mind is not allowing him achieve it because his background has knocked his courage. We know from the American Dream, his experiences in the past have made him so brittle and angry. However Crooks can be very venerable to people that are more powerful than him, such as Curleys wife. Steinbeck introduces another unique character into Of Mice and Men. Curleys wife is the only girl on the ranch therefore she is also excluded from society. Even though she is more powerful than Crooks, she is not all that different from him. Both are very lonely and want someone to talk to. Both are at a disadvantage, Crooks with his race and Curleys wife with her gender. Curleys wife does not know what to do in life. We know her dream was to be an actress, but was crushed by her very own mother. Now her dream is to be more grown up. She dresses like an adult with make-up, her hair done up and a stylish dress. However she is still described by Steinbeck as a girl. A girl was standing there. She wants to be respected from the men all around her. Being the only woman in the ranch can be intimidating. In the 1930s woman were less valued than men. They had fewer rights. The reason why she married Curley is to get some attention and be more respected because he was the ranchers son. Curleys wife is a mercenary; she married him for his money and as a rebound for her loss as an actress. Curley is very much respected by all the men so Curleys wife married him so all the men could look up to her just as they do to Curley. Curleys wife unexpectedly lets her true feelings out to Lennie. I dont like Curley. He aint a nice fella. This shows that she is using him but at the same time Curley is using his wife. However Curleys wife moved to the countryside to get a better life but after two weeks she found out that she had made a mistake. She already hasnt got a good reputation. All the men think she is a bit of a tart. Two weeks married, and got the eye. This shows that she hasnt been married to Curley for a short period of time and yet she is being judged already just the by the way she looks and dresses. Curley says he keepin that hand soft for his wife. We instantly know that Curley himself is an abuser. We know this because his dream was to become a boxer. Having not achieved this dream he converts it into abusing women. Curleys wife is a lot more than what she looks. There is always a person inside who has a dream. The death of Curleys wife is very significant of Steinbecks treatment of the theme of the American Dream. We know this because Lennie was the one who shook her, shook her so much that he broke her neck, and killed her. Lennies character is very timid, so expectedly her runs away, trying to hide from society. We as the reader know Lennies dreams are going to come to an end, but we dont know how. That is how Steinbeck creates the atmosphere which makes the reader what to carry on. Lennie was the one who killed Curleys wifes dreams, so now Curley is going to kill his. When Lennie dies, the whole dream dies. We know that both Lennie and George do not have a family. They have each other instead. They care about one another which makes them so unique. I want you to stay with me here. This shows that even know Lennie thinks George is going to give him hell, he isnt. He cares about Lennie and he knows that if he doesnt kill Lennie himself now that the other ranch men will kill him, brutally. George slowly but in a clever way kills Lennie. He has made the choice of how Lennie is going to die. This is a complete contrast of how Candys dog died. George keeps the American Dream alive so it is the last thing that Lennie remembers. Steinbeck describes the dream in such detail so we can actually picture it ourselves. Lennie remembers that one day they could live offa the fatta the lan. Lennie has no idea of what George is building up to do. However we as readers know what is going to happen. Steinbeck builds up suspense of how George gradually kills Lennie. George describes how they are going to live with pigs and chickens. This is typical of the American Dream, a chance to get rich and have land. However that dream was collapsing all around them as they live in a poor barn house where all the men share the same room. Lennie is very reluctant about why George has forgiven him. Lennie says that he might as well just go away to show that after George said if I was alone I could live so easy. Lennie thinks by doing this it would make George happy. We know that if George kills Lennie, he could no longer for fill his dreams without his companion. Gradually Lennie gets very excited about their dream. Lets get that place now. That is when George pulls the trigger and lets Lennie go, for good. George made this choice of killing his best friend. Of what looks horrific, he is actually doing Lennie a massive favour. He was going to be killed anyway so why not do it with a blissful memory rather than a bloody one.

The primary actions of the organization were to freeze and reduce tariff levels on various commodities. Structured Teaching On Behavioral Problems School age is the period between 6-12 years. Schoolers are emerging as creative persons who are preparing for their future role in society. The school years are a time of new achievement and new experiences. Childrens individual needs and preferences should be respected. Children who are productive and engaged in the school experience, whether academic or vocational, is not likely to become at risk student. All young children can be naughty, defiant and impulsive from time to time, which is perfectly normal. However, some children have extremely difficult and challenging behaviors that are outside the norm for their age. The behavior of some children and adolescent are hard to change. Children do not always display their reactions to events immediately although they may emerge later. Children who suffer from behavior disorders are at a higher risk for school failure, suicide, and mental health problems. A behavioral problem is a departure from normal (acceptable) behavior beyond a point, to the extent behavioral problems can manifest themselves in many ways. There are interchangeable terms for behavior disorders- disruptive behavior disorder, conduct disorders, emotional disorders, and emotional disturbances. Warning signs of behavior disorders include: Harming or threatening themselves, other people Damaging or destroying property Lying or stealing Not doing well in school, skipping school Early smoking, drinking or drug use Early sexual activity Frequent tantrums and arguments Consistent hostility towards authority figures. Children misbehave for a variety of different reasons. Children problems are often multi-factorial and the way in which they are expressed may be influenced by a range of factors including developmental stage, temperament, coping and adaptive abilities of the family, the nature and duration of illness. The school is an institution in society specifically designed as the formal instrument for educating children. School is a place where children spend the largest portion of their time outside the home. Schools should offer a safe and respectful learning environment for everyone. In addition to scholastic achievement, school experiences should contribute to healthy development in terms of harmonious interpersonal relations and positive self image. Teachers appear to be important social partners, as the quality of a teacher and child relationship has been related to several aspects of short and long-term school adaptation. Studies have shown that teachers may reject these children, respond to them with less support and punishment than other child receives. A parent is really the childs first teacher and critical to student success is the involvement of parent. A teacher is a person who provides students direct classroom teaching, or classroom-type teaching in a non-classroom setting, or educational services directly related to classroom teaching. Teachers play an influencing role in development of personality. Listening to childs problems is an important skill of a teacher. Disruptive behavior is a major factor contributing to teacher stress and discontent and significantly affects teachers capacity to maintain a productive and orderly learning environment. Most teachers and school personnel concur that they are able to identify behavioral and academic problems within first few weeks of a school year. Teachers expectations and actions greatly affect the childs behavior. Dealing with difficult or inappropriate behavior in schools can be a challenging task for any educator, regardless of experience. Teachers need to use positive interactive approaches than responding to inappropriate behaviors. Teachers need to communicate care and concern rather than a desire to punish when reacting to inappropriate behaviors. Children with behavioral problems have received more criticism and have suffered deterioration in their interactions with teachers over time. The early detection and treatment of children with behavioral problems at an early age may reduce treatment costs and improve quality of life of those children. Effective way of reducing behavioral problems can be through behavioral plan developed by parents, teachers, children, administrators and school staff. Use positive interactive approaches that remove the need for inappropriate behavior. The components include, inform pupil what is expected, avoid threats, build self confidence, use positive modeling and provide positive learning environment. REVIEW OF LITERATURE Review of literature is a key step in research process. The typical purpose for analyzing a review existing literature is to generate research question to identify what is known and what is not known about the topic. The major goals of review of literature are to develop a strong knowledge base to carry out research and non research scholarly activity. Review of literature from the present study is been divided into: Studies related to behavioral problems of school children Studies related to knowledge of teachers on behavioral problems of school children Studies related to structured teaching programme. Studies related to behavioral problems of school children Margrot Prior, Shanya Virasinghe and Diana Smart (2005) conducted a study on behavioral problems in Sri Lankan school children associations with socio economic status, age, gender, academic progress and religion. Using the strengths and difficulties questionnaire modified version of the rutter parent questionnaire including items on childrens strength: with parent, teacher and child informants, was administered to assess the mental health problems in this population. In this study 10 13 years children were included. The study concluded that rates and types of problems consistent with other international studies on children mental health. Problem rates were higher in boys and were associated with lower socio economic status, religion and poorer academic performance. The study confirms the need for development of child and adolescent health services in Sri Lanka. Sujit Sar Khel, Vinod Kumar Sinha, Mani Arora, Push De Sarkar (2006) done a study on prevalence of conduct disorder in schoolchildren of Kanke. The study included 240 students studying in class V to X. Stratified random sampling were used to estimate the prevalence of conduct disorder in children. Present and Lifetime Version screening interview was used to assess the children. The result showed that conduct disorder was found in 4.58%; the ratio of boys to girls being 4.5:1. Childhood onset was found in 73% and adolescent onset in 27%. Mild conduct disorder was found in 36%, moderate in 64% and severe conduct disorder in none. Manuel Barrera et al. (2002) gave an intervention on early elementary school to reduce conduct problems: A randomized trial with Hispanic and Non-Hispanic children. The study included European American (n = 116) and Hispanic (n = 168) children from 3 communities were randomly selected to an intervention or no-intervention control condition. Intervention families received parent training, and their children received social behavior interventions and supplementary reading instruction over a 2-year period. The study concluded that at the end of a 1-year follow-up, treated children showed less teacher-rated internalizing and less parent-rated coercive and antisocial behavior than controls. Maj Prakash, Brig .S. Sudarsanan, P.K. Pardal, S. Chaudhury (2006) conducted a study on behaviour problems in a paediatric outpatient department. A sample of 50 children between the ages of 6-14 years was selected randomly for the study. The data was collected by administering child behaviour check list to children. The study concluded that behaviour problems in the subjects were externalizing ones and the mean score was 40.7 than internalizing problems and the mean score was 10.3. Mc Farlane.J.M, Groff JY, OBrien .J.A, Watson. K. (2006) done a comparative study on behaviors of children who are exposed and not exposed to intimate partner violence: an analysis of 330 black, white, and Hispanic children. Samples included 258 abused mothers and 72 non abused mothers and their children were between age of 18 months to 18 years of age and these children were compared with normative children. Data was collected using child behavior checklist from mothers. Data was analyzed using multiple analysis of variance performed for ages 6 through 18 years revealed a significant group difference (Frequency[3,183] = 3.13). Univariate tests revealed significant group differences for internalizing behavior (Frequency [1,185] = 6.81), externalizing behavior (Frequency [1,185] = 7.84), and total behavior problems (Frequency [1,185] = 9.45). Overall, children of abused mothers had significantly higher internalizing (58.5 +/- 12.1), externalizing (55.5 +/- 12.4), and total behavior pr oblems (57.6 +/- 12.3) scores than the internalizing (52.9 +/- 13.7), externalizing (49.7 +/- 10.6), and total behavior problems (51.0 +/- 13.0) scores exhibited for children of non abused mothers. b) Studies related to knowledge of teachers on behavioral problems of school children Bibou-Nakou, G.Kiossseoglou and A. Stogiannidou (2008) done a study on elementary teachers perceptions regarding school behavior problem: implications for school psychological services. The study involved 200 elementary school teachers. The questionnaire was administered to assess casual attributions and goal directed behavior on part of teachers when dealing with classroom misbehavior problems. The study concluded that misbehavior related attributions were significantly associated with teachers preferred practices and suggested that application of psychological principles to education practice should be included. Sarah B. Dwyer, Jan M.Nicholson (2005) assessed teachers knowledge of children exposure to family risk factors: accuracy and usefulness. The study involved 756children indicated that teachers had accurate knowledge of children exposure to factors such as adverse life events and family socio economic status, which predicted children mental health problem at 1 year follow up. The study concluded that asking teachers to report children exposure to particular family risk factors is feasible method for identifying children for selective interventions. Stuart W. Twemlo, M.D (2005) estimated the prevalence of teachers who bully students in school with differing levels of behavioral problems. In this study 214 teachers answered anonymous questionnaire about their perceptions of teachers who bully students and their own practices. Teachers were grouped into whether they taught at low, medium or high suspension rate schools. The study concluded that teachers from high suspension rate schools reported they bullied more students, had experienced more bullying when they were students, had worked with more bullying teachers over the past three years and had seen more bullying teachers over the past year. Dougherty J, Pucci P, Hemmila MR, Wahl WL, Wang SC, Arbabi S (2007) did a comparative study on worldwide child and adolescent mental health begins with awareness: a preliminary assessment in nine countries. In this study awareness campaign was conducted among community leaders, health professionals and teachers. The school-based studies were conducted in communities in nine countries. The study concluded that there is an increase in willingness to discuss emotional problems freely and suggested that utility of collaborating with schools so as to foster better child mental health in such under resourced communities. Kaiser, Ann P; Cai, Xinsheng; Hancock, Terry B; Foster, E Michael. (2007) conducted a survey on of primary school educators regarding burn-risk behaviors and fire-safety education. A written survey, consisting of 24 questions, was distributed to 8 primary schools. The study results shows that twenty percent of elementary school educators surveyed had experience teaching burned children (mean age: 7+/-3; range: 2-17); 8% had experience with children that were injured due to fire-play. Fire experimentation begins at 6.1+/-2 years of age (range: 2-13). Educators believe students can benefit from a fire prevention curriculum beginning at 7.3+/-1.8 years (range: 5-12). c) Studies related to effectiveness of structured teaching programme Pamela Orpinas and Arthur M. Home (2008) conducted a workshop on teacher-focused approach to prevent and reduce students aggressive behavior: the guiding responsibility and expectations for adolescents for today and tomorrow teacher program. The goals of the program were (1) to increase teacher awareness of different types of aggression, risk factors, role of the classroom teacher, and influence of the school climate on the childs behavior; (2) to develop strategies that will prevent aggression; (3) to improve teacher management skills to reduce power struggles and aggression; and (4) to enhance skills to assist students who are the targets of aggression. The study included guiding responsibility and expectations for adolescents for today and tomorrow manuals were administered to teacher. Lorrie L. Hoffman (2009) conducted a workshop on improving school climate: reducing reliance on rewards and punishment. The study included 200 teachers. Data was collected by survey on school climate and classroom management methods among teachers who are exposed to and not exposed to the conscious discipline workshops. The study demonstrated that the untrained group was unaware of the social relationship and cultural principles of conscious discipline that include releasing external control, embracing conflict resolution and implementing a more emotionally targeted reward structure in the classroom. Many teachers also showed improvement in student/teacher relationships (r=.325) and in mutual support among teachers (r=.306). Kathleen Lynne Lane, Andrea Phillips and M. Annette Little (2009) did experimental study on preventing conduct problems and improving school readiness: evaluation of the incredible years teacher and child training programs in high-risk schools. The study included teachers and students. Data was collected from them before and after the intervention. The intervention included teaching social and emotional school curriculum for students and trains teachers in effective classroom management skills and in promotion of parent-school involvement. They sent home weekly homework to encourage parents involvement. The study concluded that an intervention used by the teachers was effective and the students showed more social competence and emotional self-regulation and fewer conduct problems than control teachers and students. Carolyn M. Evertson (2005) did an experimental study on training teachers on classroom management in secondary classrooms. The studies in primary grades and more recently in the secondary grades show that the more academically effective teachers in those generally had better organized classrooms and fewer behavioral problems. Additionally, research indicates that the key to managing classrooms effectively begins from the first day of school with the systematic approach, advance preparation and planning. The study concluded that workshops and manuals were enough to provide changes in teachers behavior in the desired direction: However more specific information about nature of the training was needed to support the development of an exportable statewide model with recommendations and guidelines for use. The role that classroom observation could play in encouraging teachers to practice and perform the desired behaviors needed to be explored further. Lee Canter and Terry Paulso (2006) did a pilot study on college credit model of in- school consultation: a functional behavioral training programme. The study included 50 teachers and data was collected before and after classes for teachers in mental health principles and techniques. The teacher was trained in the implementation of functional- behavioral intervention skills. The study concluded that teachers post test score was significantly higher than pre test score. The study suggested that teachers gained knowledge on functional behavioral skills. NEED FOR THE STUDY Disruptive behavior students are in every classroom across the nation. Teachers are constantly searching for assistance, guidance, ideas, suggestions and relief from this challenge. Yet teachers must remember that they are the source of hope for many of these children and the person who plays a most important role in their lives. A teachers words and actions can affect child forever. Success in school involves being able to complete work, stay organized, get along with kids and adults, be positive about your abilities and school, follow rules, and do your best work. Before we understand children behavior, we must understand their needs. In addition to their physical needs, kids need fun, clothing, freedom, power, and a sense of belonging. Teachers who exhibit high level of efficacy use more positive reinforcement, prefer to work with whole group and present with students who are experiencing difficulty rather than ignoring or giving up on them. The teachers ability to be empathetic can also be associated with students success. School based intervention has been popular for a number of years and has produced varying degree of success in prevention of behavioral problems in children. Children should be allowed to express their true fears and anxieties about impending events. Older children may exhibit relationship disturbances with family and friends, poor school performance and behavior regression. It can be difficult to assess whether behavior of such children is normal or sufficiently problematic to require intervention. Conduct disorder are seen in appropriate 5-8% of general child population. Kadzins review of prevalence indicated that the estimated rate of conduct disorder in children aged 4-18 has ranged from 2-6%. Conduct disorder for youth underage of 18 range from 6-16% for males, 2-9% for females. Prevalence of conduct disorder was 4.58% more common in boys, the majority had childhood onset, and one-third had co morbid attention deficit hyperkinetic disorder. Conduct disorder prevalence in United States is 1-6% (1999) in children. Conduct disorder prevalence in New York is 12% had moderate level of conduct disorder and 4% had severe conduct disorder. The study was undertaken in the schools under rural and urban field practice areas of Department of community medicine. The total population of children between (10-19 yrs) of all schools was included. The prevalence of conduct disorders were maximum (12.9%) in the 6-14 yrs age group. Oppositional defiant disorder prevalence rate is 2-16% for youth (American psychiatry association 2000). School refusal occurs at all ages, appropriately 1-5% of all school-aged children have school refusal. In US aged 14-16 years children showed that 4.3% of teenagers, suffers from school phobia and 5% are identified as school refusal. The average age of onset is 7.5 years and 10.5 years. A study was conducted on prevalance of behavioral problems of school going children in Ludhiana. The study included 957 school children they assessed the behavioral problems by using Rutter B scale, which was to be completed by the class teachers. Based on the screening instrument results and parental interview, 45.6% of the children were estimated to have behavioral problems, of which 36.5% had significant problems. A comparative study was done on preschool teachers knowledge, attitude and practices on childhood developmental and behavioral disorders. The study involved 503 preschool teachers. It compared early childhood educators well versed in normal development and childhood developmental and behavioral disorders were evaluated in detecting children with potential difficulties, refer for early diagnosis and intervention. The study concluded that educational deficits in childhood developmental and behavioral disorders were found among preschool teachers. The study suggested that there is need to improve their skills to aid integration and improve special education needs, calling for training and resource support. A workshop was done on children with behavior problems: improving elementary school teachers skill to keep these children in class. This study aimed at improving their skills for coping with behavioral problems in children. The ability to hold these children helps to prevent them from dropping out of school and avoids referral to special education programs. The workshop integrated 2 interventions (1) Behavior modification skills. (2) Experimental work on the feelings that the misbehaved child evokes in teachers. In this workshop 57 elementary school teachers participated pre-test and post-test was administrated. The study concluded that evaluation of teachers skills and their ability to cope with child who misbehaves score was higher in the post-test than the pre-test. Evaluation of emotional variables after workshop had no significant change in scores. In the light of the above mentioned studies the investigator observed that the prevalence rate of psychiatric disorder in India is more in middle class children and the knowledge of teachers regarding behavioral disorder is inadequate. If the early identification of conduct disorder is not done in the child age then they may go for antisocial personality disorder. So the investigator took up this study for diploma in education students so that helps in of early identification of behavioral problems among school children. SCOPE OF THE STUDY The study to assess the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on behavioral problems of school children has tremendous scope in practice, education and further research. The scope related to nursing practice has manifold. The research contributes to detect the effective alternative intervention to manage the behavioral problems of school children, its prevention and rehabilitative measures. It attributes further research in clinical practice for super specialty in psychiatric nursing. The research to develop structured teaching programme helps to mould the nursing education curriculum in depth about its discharge process, preventive and curative procedures. The nursing educators can rebuild the concepts further in education. The findings of this study, further helps the researchers to act as catalyst to generalize the findings. The new research findings help for extensive in depth research in different aspects of assessing the effectiveness of structured teaching programme in managing the behavioral problems of school children. When behavioral problems of school children are reduced, the bodys immune system gets a boost that also effectively enhances cognitive abilities, it is considered as an effective intervention in managing stress, behavior disorders, and many other illnesses. The findings of this study help the school teachers in changing mental attitude towards problems and develop effective way to behavioral problems of school children. The research finding of the study contributes to know the epidemiology of behavioral problems of school children and in turn helps in medical and national health statistics. This data further helps to view the future planning and contributes in national health programme. MAIN OBJECTIVE To assess the effectiveness of structured teaching to reduce the behavioral problems of school children. Sub Objectives To modify and translate standardized tools of assessing stress and coping strategies among hospitalized clients To check validity and reliability of developed/modified tools. To assess the existing knowledge of diploma in education students regarding behavioral problems of school children. To evaluate the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on behavioral problems of school children among diploma in education students. To find out association between knowledge score of diploma in education students on behavioral problems of school children with selected demographic variables. OPERATIONAL DEFINITIONS Effectiveness: It refers to the significant difference between pre and post test knowledge scores of diploma in education students on behavioral problems of school children after receiving structured teaching programme. Structured teaching programme: It refers to systematically developed instructional aids designed for diploma in education students on behavioral problems of school children. Behavioral problems: Behavioral problem refers to a behavior that goes to an extreme level- behavior that is not slightly different from the usual. It includes the conditions like conduct disorder, aggression, stealing, lying, truancy, bullying, fire setting, impulsivity, oppositional defiant disorder and school fear. Diploma in education students: It refers to diploma in education students who are studying in diploma in education college at Mandi Gobindgarh. Assumptions Assumptions are the basic principles that are accepted as being true on the basis of logic or reason, without proof or verification. The study assumes that Diploma in education students may have inadequate knowledge regarding behavioral problems of school children. Hypothesis Hypothesis is a statement of predicted relationship between variables. H1-There will be significant difference between pre and post test knowledge scores of diploma in education students on behavioral problems of school children after administering structured teaching programme. The reason for selecting the setting is: 1) Easy access to subjects 2) Administration approval and expected cooperation Target Population Population includes clients who are diploma in education students Sampling procedure For selecting subjects The Purposive sampling technique through non-probability sampling approach will be used for selecting the study subjects fulfilling the inclusion criteria. Inclusion Criteria Clients who are willing and able to participate Males females of age range 20 25 years. Clients who are able to read and write English. Written informed consent Exclusion Criteria Who have been previously sensitized with same or similar intervention. Sample size Out of the total clients who will be admitted in a selected college of education, complete enumeration will be done and those who fulfill the inclusion criteria will be taken for the study. A total 200 samples, after meeting the inclusion criteria will be included. Tools and protocol for data collection The tool consists of The structured interview schedule comprised of two sections. SECTION-I Socio Demographic Data: It contains the questions related to identification data, socio demographic data, and clinical profile of the clients. The data includes 8 items which age, gender, religion, education, marital status, residence, type of family and family income. SECTION-II Self administered structured Knowledge questionnaire consists of 40 items. The tools will be checked for validity and reliability. Content Validity will be done by having the expert opinions from different fields and reliability will be done by split half method. Method of Data Collection Data will be collected by using developed and modified tools. The data will be collected in the following manner: Upon review of clients, consenting subjects who will meet the inclusion criteria will be selected. Self introduction establishing rapport with the subjects. Setting up of conductive atmosphere for data collection. Subject will be assured of the confidently of their data. On the first day purpose of the study will be explained to the sample and informed consent was taken before starting the study. A pretest will be conducted by self administration of structured knowledge questionnaire to each sample. Duration of 25 minutes will be given for each sample to complete the tool . On the same day the Structured Teaching Programme will be administered on behavioral problems of school children for 45 minutes using flash cards, ohp sheet and slides. Post test will be conducted by using the same structured knowledge questionnaire after 7 days of the structured teaching programme. Plan of pilot study Pilot study will be conducted on the diploma in education students and will be admitted in a selected college of education in Mandi Gobindgarh with 10% samples to check the feasibility of the study and validity of the tools and methodology.
